Kiefer Sutherland of Fox’s ‘24’

An interesting show in Fox’s Monday night line-up is ‘24’ starring Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer’s character, Jack Bauer, is an agent for and an integral part of CTU, Counter Terrorist Unit, another of the government’s secret, covert agencies to protect America and it’s citizens. As we look at Kiefer Sutherland’s astrology, we will find that he, in many ways, mirrors his character on this compelling show.

On December 21, 1966, Kiefer Sutherland and his twin sister, Rachel, were born in the UK to Canadian acting parents, screen legend Donald Sutherland and the esteemed stage actress, Shirley Douglas. He is also the grandson of one of Canada's most illustrious and influential politicians, Tommy Douglas - the former Premier of Saskatchewan and the founder of the Canadian system of socialized medicine.

At age 4, his parents divorced and Sutherland moved from their home in L.A. to Toronto with his mother. Kiefer spent a lot of time in the theatre with his mother and occasionally visited the movie sets where his father was working. At age 15, he caught the acting bug and he began acting in various youth theatres in Toronto. In 1984, he landed his first starring role in the 1930s coming-of-age drama, The Bay Boy - for which he won a Genie Award in 1984 (Canada's equivalent to the Academy Award)

Perhaps the most definitive descriptor for Kiefer Sutherland's career is not any particular niche he's carved for himself, but rather his versatility. In a career that spans 20 years, Sutherland has covered abundant ground; he has established his individuality as an actor, bringing to the screen a distinctive voice and a keen edged presence. While researching Kiefer I found his exact birth data, and it is used here. Since Kiefer is now living in Los Angeles / Hollywood (Beverly Hills, to be exact), I will base his relocated chart and info on that data.

Viewing Kiefer’s balance of signs, we can see that there is a strong Libra and Sagittarius flavor. Being an individual with a strong Libra presence, we would assume that he might be even-handed and harmonious. This is not surprising. I have read articles written by walk-ons (people who work on movie sets as ‘extras’) who say he is the most friendly, out-going, down-to-earth person. No snobbery or ‘I’m a star’ attitude from Kiefer! He talks to people at an even level, asks about what they do and think, and loves to accommodate requests for photos! Jack Bauer is a very outgoing guy too, when you look at him. He is careful to be polite and respectful. With anyone he would meet at CTU or in public, he would always go out of his way to be harmonizing and accommodating.

Being artistic is another Libran trait, and Kiefer loves music and used to be in (may very well still be in) a band. Actually, most people don’t know that one of Kiefer’s new digs, is a warehouse he has transformed into his living space that houses a recording studio. He has stated that he doesn’t want anyone who has talent (in ‘musical’ sense) to not have a chance to make it. Of course, others are relegated to carry out the tasks involved (while he works on television and big screen production) in deciding who is interviewed, etc, but his idea is to produce for the aspiring, and not have them befuddled in the money numbers of it. This way they have a greater chance ‘to make it’, which he takes great pride in.

Most people don’t think of it, but being an actor is artistic, because every individual actor has his own creative way of presenting the script or material. He has made many films along the way, going up and down, learning the ropes, and now finds himself a very valuable commodity in Hollywood!

Those who know Kiefer say he is very diplomatic, balancing, and has a strong sense of fairness. These are all Libran traits. Venus rules Libra, and while it is not strongly aspected in his chart, his Mercury forms a trine with his natal Moon (14 degrees Aries & Sagittarius). This trine enables him to be able to communicate his thoughts and feelings with ease. He may be a charming person, and at times manipulative, but he has a talent for making decisions based on both his heart and mind, and we seen time & time again, Jack Bauer do the same.

Kiefer’s having a strong Sagittarian presence enables him to be more inspiring and have broad vision, as seen in his efforts to help musicians be successful. Likewise, when Jack Bauer comes across a problem or when he is driving from one hot spot to another, he always has someone at CTU following up, as he tries to stay in step (or one step ahead of) the bad guys.

Many know that Kiefer loves to play hockey. He spends whatever spare time he has in between filming and traveling, to get on the ice with friends in an ‘industrial league’. He also does his charity work playing in many ‘celebrity games’ for Microsoft and others. (His number is ‘66’ like Mario ‘The Magnificent’ Lemieux!) By doing this he fulfils his Sagittarian embodiment of enthusiastic and adventurous ambitions.

as reckless and unrestrained. He takes chances and sometimes they blow up in his face. They never kill him, but they have killed others around him (that’s what the script calls for!) and in his role of Jack Bauer, hopefully, he gets all or most of them out of his system.

He has a strong Fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) presence in his chart, which helps him stay active and not reading books (all the time). Most of the parts he has played in films have been very fitting for him. Now that you know this much about Kiefer, you can go back and see why he and his characters were so much alike in more ways than you once thought. You see, even when you act, it is YOU that is giving YOUR version of another.

Kiefer has probably always been a highly motivated, action person with many goals and aspirations for the future. He has always been his best when vital and spontaneous, enjoying the challenge of traveling down new and adventurous roads in his life. I have heard that his enthusiasm is irrepressible and infectious. More than likely, his weakness lies in his tendency to exaggerate and his inability to cope with the more mundane activities in life (doing laundry, paying bills, washing the car and the like).

Kiefer’s balance of modes is Cardinal Strong, with 13 planets or points in Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Aquarius). This would mean that Sutherland is probably apt to enjoy a challenge and action, and he could more easily become frustrated when he have no recourse for change. As his character, Jack, he certainly exudes a dynamic, take-no-prisoners, attitude, and aptly is the ‘star’ (center) of the show. Sutherland would expect others to also rise to a challenge, and may have trouble when they don’t.

Keifer Sutherland’s balance of houses will give us an indication to which house (areas) he may excel in and why, along with areas that provide a more difficult challenge. His third house of communication, early learning and siblings is the strongest in the chart and is where Kiefer feels the most confident and able to manage with the least problems. His early learning, while living with his mother, enabled him to ‘hang out’ at the theatre and learn much about acting and how to ‘portray’ properly. Kiefer has a twin sister and his closeness (either physically or unconsciously) may be represented here. Since short journeys are also a concern of the third, his trips with his mother to other theatres and the like are accentuated here. Another exoteric and esoteric keyword included in this house is mental processes and mental energy, and with his N Mercury forming a tight trine (180 degree angle) to his Moon, both of these would be greatly enhanced because of it. Another house that is lively is his seventh House. The 7^th is about partnerships. Most people see this house as the house of marriage (or a committed relationship). Granted Kiefer had an early marriage in which he and his first wife, Camelia Kath married too young and it ended in a divorce. But the couple had a daughter Sarah Jude and she is a major source of pride for Kiefer and he is very involved in her life, so there actually was a measurable positive to ‘relationships’ here. Kiefer also was in a heavy relationship with Julia Roberts that went south at the last minute. That turned out to be very positive karma too, in the long run, because in 1996, Kiefer married fellow Torontian Kelly Winn, a former model.

Most people don’t recognize it but the 7^th house includes partnerships in business too. Kiefer has had a number of business ventures that have been very successful with other people, so again, this proves to be a strong point in his life in California. As for Jack Bauer, his relationships with his wife, which never panned out as they had planned, also parallels Kiefer’s in the same respect; Kim, has (thru 2 seasons plus, as far as I have viewed to this point) been a pleasurable reminder of their love. The seventh house rules open enemies, and Jack’s many enemies are seen by us (open) but not, often, by him.

In conclusion to this part of my astrological view of Kiefer Sutherland, I want to impart to you one more thought of his chart that stands out very clearly. In his balance of quadrants and hemispheres, as well as the phase of the Moon at birth, it is very clear to me that they also confirm how Cardinal strong Kiefer is.

His first quadrant is particularly strong. This is the quadrant from the Ascendant (cusp of the first house, 13 Libra) to the cusp of the fourth (15 Capricorn). It marks Kiefer (and Jack Bauer) as an independent individual, very capable of organizing his own life. Sutherland may be considered as self-centered by some who know him, but the planets in this quadrant will highlight the areas of life in which he wants to express himself.

Kiefer’s eastern hemisphere is notably stronger than the rest of the hemispheres. The eastern quadrant is the east side of the (10^th house cusp) Midheaven / Imum Coeli (4^th house cusp) axis. It imparts to us that Kiefer is a self-motivated and self-oriented individual. He likes to map out his own life and follow his own path, experiencing difficulties only if anyone stands in his way. Sutherland seems to be the type that values his independence (as does Bauer) and enjoys his own company. Kiefer may enjoy the company of other people, but only if they give him plenty of freedom for his own pursuits. Knowing this I would suggest to Kiefer a need to watch out for egocentric and selfish behavior.
